The Black Cauldron (1985)

The Black Cauldron is not one of the best Disney classics to recommend for younger viewers. Even when I was little, it scared me to death, literally, and the story itself was amazing, full of adventure and magic. The Black Cauldron tells the captivating story of Taran, a young pig-keeper’s assistant with a strong desire to become a hero. His aspirations take a dramatic turn when his master, Caer Dallben, alerts him that their pig, Hen Wen, is in danger from the formidable Horned King. This wicked and ruthless ruler seeks the legendary Black Cauldron, a powerful artifact capable of resurrecting an army of dead warriors. With this weapon, the Horned King poses a significant threat, as nothing would stand in his way to dominate the world and obliterate anyone who opposes him. When Dallben tells him to take Hen Wen and hide somewhere where the Horned King can never find them, Hen Wen gets captured. Hen Wen wields powerful oracle abilities, which I’d like to emphasize for clarity. On his journey to rescue Hen Wen, Taran meets friends along the way who help him with his quest to destroy the Black Cauldron. Gurgi, Princess Eilonwy, and Fflewddur Fflam all join Taran on his quest to stop the Horned King once and for all. There are some scenes that kids should never see in this movie, which is why I recommended it to teens and the older generations. For this movie, I give it a B-. You can see why I rate it this way if you’ve ever watched it.
